Since I was young, I've always been fascinated in examining the unconventional, unusual and often ignored corners of the world. There is amazing beauty all around us, and it's often simply at best ignored, and at worst destroyed by humanities hustle of self involved and un-aware living. When was the last time looked in the sky and saw an inexplicable rainbow in the clouds?

The camera serves as the ideal tool to capture the moments of insight and awareness that snap me out of my daily life and into the world. This wonderful tool also has the ability to view our world in its own unique way, bringing light to a new perspective that often suprises me. These rarities of expanded consciousness I hope to capture, preserve, and share. It's my hope that this work will allow more people to walk in the world with eyes open.

My photography can't be pinned to a specific genre. I can and will explore any new facet that allows me to see the world in fresh ways. My photos represent my personal exploration and experimentation. My camera is my friend and co-conspirator on my journey through life. It has it's own personality, which I am always learning new ways to work with.

03/3/2006 New Toys:
I've just added a Nikon D70s to my collection. So far it's turning out to be an awesome camera! It behaves very differently from the Olympus both in usability and results. Battery life is excelent, it's far faster doing just about anything, and it's RAW+JPG mode gives me the best of both worlds (quick results, and maximum editing flexibility). All the controls are placed where you'd expect it all. There's very little need to go into the menus best the initial setup. It's capable of recognizing when non-ttl equipment is in the hotshoe, and it just uses them. No trickery like the C-8080. The built-in flash is excelent. The only reason to go to an external Speedlight is bounce options. My only gripe is the mirror lockup shuts down the camera. You can't lock-up the mirror and trigger a long exposure without vibration. There's ways around that, a black-card and a slightly longer exposure does fine. So, far from a deal breaker. Next big item on the list is a Tamron 18-200mm lens.

Another recent item I'm happy with is a LumiQuest soft screen. It's like a little fold up soft-box for your built in flash. It's obviously not as good as a real softbox on a monolight, but it does a great job with reducing the harshness of the flash. It also fits the D70 like a glove.

02/09/2006 Lost data, new site:
Welcome to Synaptic Studio, the new web presence of Michael Sims. A lot has happened recently including the loss of the hard disk most of my photography was contained on, as well as my old gallery. I used this sad misfortune to overhaul my gallery, and you're looking at the result. I'm in the midst of doing major surgery on the disk to recover data, so I'll post new (older) images as the become available. In the meantime, my latest work is online. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I did shooting them!
